1. Pay down your cards.
Owe less. Score goes up. Simple math. If your card is almost maxed, that looks bad. Get it under 30% of the limit. Even better? Under 10%. Pay off one card completely and watch what happens. Three credit cards is the magic number. If the bank sees that you can pay off one credit card consistently every month they’ll give you some credit points, but if they see you can consistently pay off three? That is the sweet spot I have found to maximize credit boost.
2. Ask for a higher limit.
Call your credit card company. Say “can you raise my limit?” If they say yes, you suddenly look less risky. Just do not spend more. That is the trick.
3. Jump on someone else’s card.
Find a friend or parent with good credit. Ask them to add you as an authorized user. You get their good history for free. Just make sure they pay their bills.
4. Check for mistakes.
Your credit report probably has errors. No joke. Go to AnnualCreditReport.com. Look for stuff that is not yours. Dispute it. Takes ten minutes. Could raise your score for free.
5. Never be late.
Set up autopay. Right now. Even if it is just the minimum. One late payment hurts for months. Autopay saves you from yourself.
6. Do not close old credit cards.
I know you want to. But do not. Closing a credit card lowers your available credit and shortens your history. Just cut it up and leave the account open.
7. Try a credit builder loan.
Ask your bank about a credit building loan. You pay a little each month. They report it as a loan. At the end, you get your money back and it builds a little credit.
8. Stop applying for stuff.
Every application dings your score. Only apply when you need to. And if you are shopping for a car or house, do all your applications within two weeks.
9. Add your rent and bills.
Your rent does not count unless you make it count. Use Experian Boost for free. Or try Piñata for rent. Just do not be late. Then it backfires.
10. Check credit once a month
You do not need to look every day. Check once a month with a free app like Credit Karma. Just look for big drops or weird accounts. Catch problems early.
One last thing.
Ignore credit repair scams. Nobody can erase a real late payment. Just be patient. Pay on time. Keep balances low. Your score will get there.
That is it. Pick two of these and start today. You got this!
